Hi.
I think that it would be very smart if we would add the possibility to choose different criteria for voting (example: on topic, funny, smart, beautiful etc) on each message.
So, let’s suppose, if there’s someone writing jokes in the pages where there’s a serious discussion about something, we may give his messages a minus for the on-topicness, but maybe a plus if it is funny… so if someone wants to read something funny he can, but he can still avoid what he has no interest in (off-topic, example), every time he wants.
Thank you, and best compliments for you job!

This is interesting to verify votes. They randomly call voters to verify votes. voting confirm
VOTE VERIFICATION
To ensure a secure and accurate vote, a random sample of voters will receive an automated phone call immediately after voting online. Please provide us with a telephone number where you can be reached right now.
There is only a small chance you will be called, and you will absolutely not be asked for a financial contribution by phone.
THIS IS A SECRET BALLOT VOTE. We will not make public your vote or any of your personal information.

OK, this is very much slashdot moderation I guess ;)
I never really thought about that possibility, as it is today, the only concern is about visibility. You boost or decrease an element’s visibility. No categorization.
Could tags do the trick?
Maybe another kind of categorization could be done through electoral lists. As a user, you would decide to follow the recommandations of a bunch of people which you consider funny, or not depending on what you want! In fact you could even constitute your own electoral list, integrating people whom you know you love the votes!
But those electoral lists are not yet done. And they look quite complex from a performance and interface point of view.
None the less, what do you think?

The idea about using electoral lists is cool too!
Probably though it is easier, at this first stage, just to have the chance to follow the votes of one other user.
And adding more criteria should be quite easy: we duplicate the fields containing info about votes and rename them (let’s say “intopic” “smart” etc), we add the buttons to vote for each category for each post, the “filter” right menu and we’ve got it!
I can’t still do it myself cause I’m having some troubles installing the software on my local apache.

As of now we just follow all and every votes. No distinction between legitimate one and others.
But adding them is technically not that difficult, mostly a matter of database fields. The trouble is management. How do you add or remove someone from a list? How do you list participants?

Won’t be easy at all. You only have to look at SlashDot to see how a mess in functionalities it has become.
Ultimately it’s a democratic system. Which happens to be implemented as a forum. The goal is for everybody to vote according to a voting method. Right now it’s approval voting.

Theoretically, you will only need ruby on rails, PostgreSQL, and subversion. If you need help, or have a server with SSH access, I’ll be happy to help!!!
Then we’ll be able to link our servers together.
